Practical English for practical science.
The "Talking about science" project was born from a series of conversations about how non-English speaking students learn English. Up to a certain point, language teaching has to be about grammar and vocabulary. However, languages are about getting things done and by doing activities which relate directly to the needs of the learner ie language in a natural context of use, there is a greater possibility to generate interest and learning.

Science is at the heart of modern life and English is the language of science. This project is based in Northern Italy and is aimed at using science as a vehicle for practicing and building confidence in the use of English.

The target audience is high school students who already have a good level of English and who wish to practice it in a non-linguistic area (no offence to Bill Shakespeare!).

Much more than a list of technical terms for direct translation, science is very practical and offers a great way to engage English by thinking about, planning and doing experiments or by discussing the evidence and theories: there is a vast amount of material to engage and encourage active reasoning.

The project is currently focused around high school level chemistry and biology and is evolving constantly. Please look around and get in touch with ideas and suggestions.
